Pearl Grey Brahmas

Pearl Grey Brahmas

A rare, ultra-pale grey project colour at Wolfhoeve

What you see

Birds read as very light, silky grey with minimal or no red pigment. Hackles and tail are soft charcoal to pearl.
Overall effect is cooler and paler than standard Blue, and not lavender-porcelain.

Our working hypothesis

The Pearl Grey phenotype in our line appears to come from a dark base with strong dilution of black,
without lavender. Notes from our foundation eggs indicate claims of silver, but our candling
and grow-out suggest an E-based dark background with polygenic dilution. We treat this as a
selection-driven project rather than a fixed standard variety.

  • Likely not lavender – we do not observe the cream-beige shift typical of lav/lav.
  • Very low red – birds show little to no phaeomelanin, supporting a cool grey outcome.
  • Possible components – dark base plus multiple diluters or rare modifiers producing pearl tone.

How it differs from look-alikes

  • Not standard Blue – Pearl Grey is paler and less slate, with reduced contrast.
  • Not Porcelain – Porcelain requires lavender and mottling; our Pearl Grey has neither.
  • Not Silver Laced – no strong black edging and no silver ground patterning.

Breeding approach

  • Pair the palest, cleanest greys while watching type and feather quality.
  • Avoid introducing lavender unless testing – the aim is a non-lavender pearl.
  • Track offspring tone with photos at set ages to quantify stability across seasons.

Project status

Pearl Grey is a work in progress. As generations accumulate, we will publish a genotype note
if a consistent explanation emerges. Availability will be limited to project eggs and growers.

Wolfhoeve is developing Pearl Grey as a distinct, cool ultra-pale grey without lavender, while preserving Brahma size and softness.
